Schools and Education Buildings

Specialist school architects with a particular expertise in SEN design.

Joyful, inclusive, evidence-based

We are specialist school architects with a particular expertise in designing for special educational needs (SEN). We work with school boards, patron bodies, and the Department of Education to deliver learning environments that are inclusive, calming, and designed around the real needs of children and staff.

Our education work is grounded in evidence. We have developed a bespoke DWCO SEN Design Manual that translates leading international and national research into practical design specifications, synthesising the Department of Education's SDG-02-04 guidance, British Standard BS 8300, and European Standard EN 17210 into a coherent design framework. This is not a theoretical exercise - it is a working tool that informs every decision on our school projects.

We are registered members of the RIAI and have experience delivering school projects under the Department of Education's procurement framework.

What we deliver

  • This is our specialism. We design schools and dedicated SEN bases that respond to the specific sensory, spatial, and safety needs of children with additional needs. Our approach considers acoustics, lighting, colour, wayfinding, sensory regulation spaces, secure outdoor areas, and the practical needs of staff supporting children with complex requirements. Every SEN project we design is informed by our evidence-based design manual and developed in close collaboration with the school's staff team.

  • We design mainstream school buildings that are bright, efficient, and adaptable to evolving teaching methods. Our approach prioritises natural daylight, good acoustics, natural ventilation where possible, and flexible layouts that can accommodate different classroom configurations and future curriculum changes.

2

  • Many schools need additional accommodation - whether for growing enrolments, new SEN provision, or replacement of temporary prefabs. We design extensions that integrate sensitively with existing buildings while meeting current building regulation and energy performance standards. For schools on historic or constrained sites, we bring particular skill in working within tight constraints while delivering generous, functional spaces.

3

  • Some of our most rewarding work involves schools on historic campuses. Our Sacred Heart Primary School project involves creating a new SEN base within a campus containing seven Protected Structures, balancing conservation sensitivity with contemporary educational requirements. We use Building Information Modelling (BIM) to survey, document, and design around heritage buildings with precision.

Designing a school is designing a place where children spend their childhood.

Designing a school is designing a place where children spend a significant part of their childhood. We take that seriously. Our approach begins with listening - to teachers, to special needs assistants, to principals, and where appropriate to children themselves - to understand how the school actually operates day to day and what the real priorities are.

For SEN projects in particular, we know that the physical environment has a direct impact on children's ability to learn, regulate, and feel safe. Our evidence-based approach means we don't guess at what works. We draw on published research in sensory design, educational psychology, and inclusive design standards to make informed decisions about everything from corridor widths and acoustic treatment to the colour of walls and the type of door handles.

We design to nZEB standards as a minimum, prioritising a fabric-first energy strategy that reduces operational costs for schools managing tight budgets. Good daylighting, effective ventilation, and robust, low-maintenance materials are not extras - they are fundamental to creating learning environments where children and staff thrive.

We understand the Department of Education's procurement and approval processes and can guide school boards through each stage, from the initial accommodation brief through to planning, construction, and handover. We have never had a planning refusal on architectural grounds, a track record that reflects our rigorous approach to pre-planning consultation and design quality.
