The Challenge
This project presented a series of significant and complex challenges from the outset. Our client's objective was to develop a multi-unit residential project that maximized the site's potential, but the site itself was steeply sloping, creating inherent difficulties in complying with universal accessibility requirements.
The economic climate of high construction costs demanded an exceptionally efficient building design to ensure project viability. Compounding these issues were significant planning challenges related to on-site ecology, including the presence of protected wildlife such as bats and badgers, which required sensitive and careful management throughout the design and planning process.
The core challenge was to navigate these considerable site, cost, and ecological constraints while creating a cohesive, desirable, and robust community for future residents.
Our Process
Adhering to our core value of Transformative Collaboration, we worked in close partnership with our client through our proven 4-stage process. The design for the three new apartment buildings, encompassing 58 apartments, a crèche, and retail units, was born from a simple, elegant concept.
By utilizing a common list of architectural ingredients for each building and then rotating their orientations on the site, we fostered both variety and cohesion. This strategic approach, developed through detailed 3D modeling and proactive communication, ensured every apartment benefits from a unique outlook and optimal access to sunlight. This method allowed us to create a development that feels integrated yet diverse—a whole greater than the sum of its parts.
Outcome & Impact
The result is a thoughtfully crafted living environment centered around a variety of well-designed and useful communal open spaces.
