High-performance facilities for an important community resource
The site is currently a gap in the street. We propose a new centre to provide a generous and welcoming public place. It meets the ground on a solid plinth, with heavy engineering brick and galvanised steel doors. It turns the street corner with a covered recessed entrance, the community centre cantilevered above. Inside, a series of scalloped roof lights cast an even daylight on the high-performance boxing gym.
Above the ground, a translucent polycarbonate façade lets light in, and shows a hint of the activity inside to passers-by. At night the building softly glows, illuminating the street corner and connecting the building to the town.
